For The Light

For The Light

Darkness does not descend
It does not envelop
Darkness has always been, is
And will always be

It's the struggle
As ever present
As the lacking
That one must endure

Without this endurance
This fortitude
There is darkness
Always

  1. This poem sings like Dylan Thomas' Do Not Go Gently. Although I'm sure it is not age, or the dimming of the light, you are describing, your struggle for goodness brings that to mind. The lacking. Right? How can you convey such depth in so few words? Such sadness. Well done.

    1. Thank you. I appreciate that you found the sadness in the poem, but I do hope that it might have left you and anyone who reads it with a sense of hope as well. I mean, the point I was trying to make is that having negative emotions in your life is not a sign of failure and is, in fact, a part of the wonderful life. To be honest, I was inspired by the coming together of Joy and Sorrow from Inside Out.

  2. I feel like this poem expresses the true importance of darkness, and that's why I find it so exalting. Bravo, Bray! Woo! I also feel like this poem can branch off onto the way some people may be blind sighted by ignorance of how darkness can be beneficial. It reminds me of this one poem by Christopher Poindexter, where he basically says that society sometimes may see the darkness as something that shouldn't be talked about, and how it may make a person who understands that 'sorrow is just important as bliss' feel misunderstood. Well, here. It's this poem that goes a little like this:

    Your darkness is a symphony

Played in explosions of silence to a crowd that has fallen in love with noise

If they refuse to applaud you
It isn't because your music isn't beautiful
It is because they have no idea how to love what they don't understand
And that, my darling, is the most horrific flaw in this mixed up world

Its kind of like yin-yang type of mentality, right?

I feel like if you and Mr.Poindexter ever collaborated ( if that's even possible), you two could take over the world for the better! Haha.

    1. Wow, what an amazing poem. Thank you for sharing. I would love to meet this guy, but yeah, don't know how possible that would be. As for changing the world for the better... well, that's why I teach and it's why I decided to stop keeping my poetry to myself. So, here's hoping that I can change the world (even if it's in the smallest of ways) for the better as often as I can :)

  3. I love that movie so much!! Disney embracing the whole person, not just the happy one, makes me very happy! I can see why it would inspire you.
I was having trouble seeing the hope though but it just clicked. It's hopeful BECAUSE there's a struggle for the light. Of course darkness and duality exist in each of us, Bruce, but you see hope because of the continuation of the struggle for good. It's still sad but then again, isn't the existence of sadness also a part of the emotional rainbow that you are embracing?
