Generating Corruption
You come at us
With you and yours,
But we fight back
With ours and hours
That's right
With numbers and
With time
So much time
Time spent
In the trenches you dug
In the pits of repression
You purposefully built
To create this image
Of complacency
Of apathy and narcissism
That you can blame
For the failure
That is the present
That you constructed
In the past
You have stolen from us
Time itself
You have stolen
The future
Originally I thought that it was just Dark Delightful Dreams and One Voice that link together but upon closer readings, I realized that the arc actually starts at Generating Corruption (unless I'm reading waaaaay more into this than actually is intended!). I'm enjoying this poem on several different levels: the stark use of language, words that are sharp, to the point, conveying the anger felt at receiving such a broken world from the previous generation. Righteous anger is not one of the more common themes found in this blog so I'm enjoying its treatment here. The idea that the Millennials are not just pissed off about the state of the world that they are receiving, but also angry and resentful of the stereotypes put into place by the previous generation regarding them, is a timely topic, particularly in light of the current political arena where the Millennials can make or break a candidate. Of the three poems, Generating, Dark Delightful, and One Voice, I feel this one is pivotal; where the speaker begins to tap into anger, expressing it in a generalized but accurate and heartfelt way.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for such an insightful analysis of these three poems. I had never intended for them to be a trilogy, but I absolutely love how you weaved the three of them together. Never ever be afraid of reading into the poem in a way that not even the author had thought to. Let me make it clear that I welcome and encourage anyone who reads my poetry to read as deep and as uniquely as they so choose.
DeleteSo, I get an A? (I'm still trying to figure out how to include Time Traveler with this series - working on it) Thank you for such excellent material to dissect - this was a lot of fun 😀
ReplyDeleteA+ :)
