One Voice
We stand
We speak
We sit
We listen
Together
Our voices are heard
Together
We refuse to abandon
It's in this strength
Our strength
A strength
Found in our unity
From behind the podium
And from our seats
Crowding the endless rows
With those of us who cherish
...
Cherish what's most important
The only force
That could save us
From its absence
In the hearts
Of those that
Kept us down
Shoved us away
In fear
And in ignorance
In self-seeking glorification
For which we pay the price
No more
We are a force
We are a will
We are the silenced
No longer
We do not rage ahead
In anger
No, we will save this world
With love
Beautiful resolution! Back to the idea of the Millennials, or whoever "we" is, One Voice is a song of empowerment. In Generating, the speaker introduced us, the readers, to the idea of dissatisfaction and anger at the treatment from the proceeding generations. In DDD, the anger focused in and got sharper - as if the speaker were fine tuning an instrument. Here we see the result in an acknowledgment of the anger and hatred but with a forward look at how to go into combat. With love. The writer spoke of this poem as an answer to why he writes poetry. I think it can also be an answer as to why he teaches.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you were able to see the connection between why I write and why I teach.
